The Story
Laius and Jocasata, the king and queen of Thebes had a baby. Laius went to the oracle at Delphi to ask questions about it. The oracle told Laius that his son was eventually going to murder him. After hearing that, Laius ordered that his baby son should be left in the woods with a pin through his foot to refrain him from crawling away.
The baby was later found, and taken to the king and queen of Corinth. They wanted a son but couldn’t have one, so they adopted the baby. The queen of Corinth named the baby Oedipus, which means swollen foot. They planned on never telling the baby he was adopted.
As Oedipus grew older, he began to listen to the orcles at Delphi. The oracle told him that he was one day going to kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus ran away from Corinth that night, in attempt to escape his fate. In his travels in his chariot, he came to a crossroads. Another Chariot came to the crossroads at the same time, and it went through without letting Oedipus go. Oedipus was angry over this and got out and killed the other man.
When Oedipus arrived in Thebes, he was asked to answer a riddle. After Oedipus answered the riddle correctly, he entered Thebes. The Thebans were very upset that somebody killed their king, but they were happy Oedipus answered the riddle correctly and they made him their new king.
After becoming king, Oedipus married the queen, Jocasta. As years went on, Oedipus and Jocasta had four children. Years later a plague came to Thebes, killing many people. King Oedipus found of that the plague was a result of having a bad man in Thebes, and to stop the plague they must find the bad man and get rid of him.
Sigmund Freud's Theory
Sigmund Freud, who is often considered the father of modern day psychotherapy believed that much of people’s mental anguish and illness rested in their view of sex. One of Sigmund Freud’s most controversial theories was the Oedipal Complex derived from the Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. Simply put, Freud believed that males unconsciously want to get rid of their fathers so that they could have sex with their mothers. In the story The Way I Found Her, Lewis Little suffers from the Oedipal Complex.
